IFES programming in Azerbaijan has spanned six national elections between 1997 and 2008. With over nine years of in-country presence, IFES is a non-partisan organization and has promoted democracy and citizen participation in Azerbaijan through targeted election administration assistance and local/community development. Current IFES programming includes a range of activities including increasing public awareness of the electoral process, technical assistance to the Central Election Commission and lower level election commissions, and assistance to the Presidential administration.

IFES also conducts an annual public opinion survey to gauge the knowledge and opinions of Azerbaijani citizens about democracy and government. Using this information, IFES has promoted an integrated approach to democracy strengthening and community development.

IFES’ work in Azerbaijan has been made possible through the support of its main donor, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), as well as generous grants from the British, German, and Norwegian Embassies, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, the Westminster Foundation for Democracy, and Statoil.
